The SkillsUSA Kansas Championships is our national qualify event for many contests. Students prepare through classroom instruction, hands-on shop and laboratory experiences and through industry based internships. The competitions are challenging, involve academic and technical skills and help students prepare for entering the workforce and/or continuing into post-secondary education.

SkillsUSA Kansas Medical Information & Liability Release Form
Please have one of these forms completed by each participant from your school and bring them to the Registration desk at WATC.  Be sure to make a copy of each form for your records.  We will keep these forms on site at all times in case of an emergency.  No signed and completed form = no eligibility!  This completed form is needed for each contestant, advisor, guest, etc. attending the conference.  Review the information and conditions on the back of this form with students.  DO NOT MAIL THESE FORMS TO THE STATE OFFICE, PLEASE.  Forms are available here (Word)

  Contest Codes

The form provided will assist in identifying individual and team events, day/date and location for each contest.  Please use this form to enter the contest codes ONLY on the Registration Form.  Note:

  • Several contests are held prior to April 16th.  However, registration deadline is still March 1st.  Please refer to the “Contests’ Dates and Locations” form in this packet.

  Conference Meals
Contestants in all events held on Thursday, April 17th will be provided a lunch at the site of the contest.  Skill Contests held prior to April 18th will have lunches provided for students, teachers and guests at each site.  Advisors and guests registered and attending the conference will also be provided lunch.  The cost for lunch is included in the registration fee.  Lunches will not be provided for the Leadership competitions on April 16th.

A Buffet Dinner is catered for conference participants on Thursday evening, April 17th.  The meal will be served at the East High School Cafeteria again.  The cost for this dinner is included in the registration fee.  However, reservations are required to provide an accurate count for the caterers.  Please use the “Meal Reservation Form” to reserve your school’s dinners.  Meal tickets will be distributed at Registration.

  Conference Housing
As in the past, each school may choose their own hotel.  There are a good variety of hotels and motels available in Wichita.  Please use the Housing Info provided by the Wichita Convention & Visitors Bureau to select your site.  Book your rooms as early as possible because the more popular ones fill quickly.  When reserving your rooms, ask for the Education Rate.  The Kansas SkillsUSA state office does not book conference hotels.  If your school has a tax I.D. form, mention this when reserving your rooms and bring a copy with you for hotel check-in.  You may be asked to fax or mail a copy of the tax form prior to arrival.

Contest Updates and other pertinent information will be sent to schools as needed.  Please review all of the material in this mailing.  Make copies as needed.  Feel free to call me with any questions, concerns, and issues at 785.296.1067 or awick@ksde.org.

  Clothing Guidelines for Competitors

The following is the official dress code for the 2008 SkillsUSA Kansas State Conference & Skills Championships:

FOR SKILL CONTESTS—the 2008 official SkillsUSA Kansas T-Shirt and jeans or good clean work pants.    Official dress (listed below) is also acceptable in specific skill contests, like Advertising Design.   Additional safety equipment or clothing maybe required.  Please consult the National SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards for further directions.

Shoes:  Work shoes, leather tennis shoes/sneakers with heavy soles are now in the workplace and acceptable.  The rule is, “Acceptable work shoes for the trade area for which you are being trained.”

Competitors may not wear sneakers or tennis shoes.

If in doubt, please contact the state office.  Contest Committee Chairs will be consulted and information shared with all Advisors.

FOR LEADERSHIP CONTESTS—Official SkillsUSA dress as follows:

Males—Red SkillsUSA blazer, windbreaker or sweater, white dress shirt, black tie, black slacks, black belt, black socks, black or cordovan shoes.  OR appropriate business dress:  dress slacks, buttoned shirt, and tie, dress shoes (not tennis shoes or sneakers, nor work boots).

Females—Red SkillsUSA blazer, windbreaker or sweater, white collarless or small collared blouse, black slacks or skirt of appropriate business length, natural or off-black hose and black shoes.  OR appropriate business dress:  dress slacks or skirt of appropriate business length, blouse or shirt, natural or off-black hose and dress shoes (not sandals, flip-flops or sneakers).

If in doubt, please contact the state office.  Contest Committee Chairs will be consulted and information shared with all Advisors.

Please Note:  Clothing with holes, torn or open parts or sections is not acceptable at the State Conference.  For casual/non-contest activities, please advise your students to dress in an appropriate manner.  It is important to be aware of the public image of career & technical education.  Our students are preparing for their professional futures.  Let’s leave a positive image whenever possible.  Advisors are asked to have this “appropriate dress” discussion with contestants prior to traveling to the conference.

Clothing Guidelines for the Awards Session

Official SkillsUSA dress (as listed on the reverse of this handout), 2008 Kansas SkillsUSA T-Shirt and clean jeans or work pants are acceptable and expected at the Awards Session.  Hats of any kind are not to be worn during the Awards Session.  Many partners, sponsors, business and industry representatives, as well as family members of contestants are attending this session and SkillsUSA Kansas wants the students to look and act in a professional manner to demonstrate respect for our guests and themselves.

Per Board of Directors Guidelines*:  Students must be in official SkillsUSA dress or 2008 Kansas SkillsUSA T-shirt or business attire to accept medals on stage during the Awards Session.  Cut-offs, shorts, other T-Shirts or any inappropriate attire is not acceptable.  Inappropriate dress will result in medal-winners being given their medals off stage.

This is the moment for the best of the best to be rewarded and recognized.  Every medalist should be up on the stage.  Please prepare the students for this exciting event in their lives.  It would be a shame to not be admitted to the stage area due to inappropriate attire.
